Drivers across the country will also soon be able to benefit from new technology to simplify parking payments. The national parking platform pilot will be rolled out nationwide so that drivers can use an app of their choice to pay instead of downloading multiple apps.
What is the National Parking Platform?
Payment for parking is lagging behind developments in other markets and industries. Parking customers, both on-street and in car parks, face a fragmented market offering a wide variety of payment options making the simple act of parking and paying complex and confusing as options are dependent on where they want to park and which payment app they have (or don't have). The National Parking Platform (NPP) is a local authority owned and DfT funded pilot project that brings customer experience into the 21st century by facilitating data exchange, digital payments, and a new way of delivering better parking and mobility services.
The NPP Pilot started out as a joint project with Manchester City Council, DfT and Parking Matters. Over the time, numerous additional partners joined and now following the latest announcement from Rishi Sunak we will noe see this rolled ot nationwide.
Benefit to Motorists
The main benefit to motorists is that it will mean you can park anywhere without the need to download multiple apps to pay for your parking. At the moment there are no plans to restrict which app you use and over time the number of apps is likely to expand.
