By the 1960s, Rolls-Royce had embraced the idea that some owners might prefer to take the wheel themselves. The two-door convertible version of the Silver Shadow quickly followed suit, becoming the most successful Rolls-Royce convertible ever. Originally known as the Silver Shadow Mulliner Park Ward Two-Door Drop Head Coupé in 1966, it was later renamed the Corniche in 1971 due to popular demand. The Corniche Convertible continued production until 1995, totalling 5678 convertibles, while the coupé was discontinued in 1980. In 1998, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd was acquired by Volkswagen, ensuring the future of both Rolls-Royce and Bentley. The licensing and production agreement between Volkswagen and BMW concluded in 2003. Rolls-Royce production shifted to the new BMW-owned factory in Goodwood, where the V12-powered Phantom was launched.
